Background Information: Yuki, born Shara Paharo and elder twin sibling to Shion Paharo, was the child of the characteristically quiet weaver, Mydia Paharo. He was aware of his father's rare presence, but had close to no relationship with the transient figure. Yuki began life in the area of the Skatay Range bordering Dalmasca and Othard, as most Veena clan Viera do. He is the sixth child of his family, with his two eldest sisters also being a pair of twins, and one of them being the object of strife. Of his twin sisters, Rena has been exiled from his homeland, leaving Rael to harbor feelings of bitterness and betrayal for her twin's defection from the Green Word. As Viera are not permitted contact with outsiders except in the defense of their forest home, Rena's desire to interact with the greater world resulted in her inability to return, and Rael's reluctance to speak about her.

To Yuki, she was the "sister I am not even permitted to remember," as her exile occurred when he was quite young.

Upon reaching puberty at age 13, he began to display more overtly masculine secondary sex characteristics and a smaller stature, unlike his twin sister who bore the typical height and form of a female Viera. As a result, he was designated as a male child as is customary for traditional Viera clans at this stage of development, and the young teen was collected by one of the master Wood Warders to serve as an apprentice, despite all of his unspoken hope that this turn of events had been nothing but a series of mistakes. As is traditional for Warders, he was bestowed the surname of his master, "Monnawesfv," or "defender of prisms."

The training of a Warder, known to be exceptionally intensive and grueling, had commenced. To obtain the title of "master," those taken must prove themselves capable of surviving on their own amidst nature and the elements, and without the assistance of others or the luxury of civilization. To follow the Green Word is to protect civilization from the outside that threatens it.

For all he feared death, he feared the sorrow of his twin sister and a mother still in mourning more still. He honed battle skills, learned the value of defending makeshift shelters and strategic vantage points to observe those who veered near the forest or passed through neutral travel zones. Basic armorcraft, leatherworking, and weaving were just as necessary as learning to differentiate medicinal herbs from poisonous ones. His cooking, much like that of his master's, was hardly ever known to contain comfort foods, but it could reliably get a person through a cold night even with a poor hunting yield.

Obtaining the title of "master" felt more like a chain than an achievement.

Inevitably, he would undergo one final name change when the echoes of his exiled elder sister would become a turning point in his story as well. Although he survived the rigorous Warder training that some male children do not, he noted a small village of Domans on the outskirts of one of his posts. Forbidden to interact directly and somewhat notable for being the brother of an exile and son of a beloved member of the community, he had every intention to hold out and remain at arm's length for longer than he managed. His settlement remained aware of some of the activities of other nearby groups, and all were taught small (and possibly not perfectly accurate) bits of the languages for the purpose of anticipating assaults on the Veena from afar.

For a time, he watched from a distance as an unseen defender and benevolent force. He did not interact directly with the village of Domans nor did he make regular pilgrimages to his own home as Warders typically do; instead, he left herbs, occasional stray pieces of raw materials, and tea leaves for some of the ailing Doman villagers, and crafted items further still from the outskirts of his home village. To show too much familiarity with a home that was no longer his to claim would only invite further scrutiny and trouble, and surely all it would accomplish is jeopardizing his title of "master."

Whether he was taken with the idea of the village of Domans or simple loneliness, he longed to not feel that he was a world apart from the home he had once known and the families he did not, as both shared a common threat but could not unite on account of tradition. The Garleans' continued occupation of Doma posed a threat to any whispers of disloyalty or resistance against the Empire. The small village of Domans, ordered to evacuate for the purpose of constructing a new Castrum, began packing what they could as they were ordered. Staging a small resistance with the time given, a band of Domans attempted to keep their land rather than keep quiet, one of them being Yukito Furukawa - notable son of one of the families that Shara (Yuki) had tried to aid in silence. Breaking this silence and pleading with Yukito to not take this course of action and feeling agonizingly close to success at preventing harm, he was devastated to be told that the resistance was too critical to the lives of his friends and family for Yukito to give up on, even if it cost him.

And cost the Doman it did, dying alongside his horrified mother and many of his friends for not giving the Empire its due respect in exchange for its protection. Yukito and his became just another example, another footnote of regular Domans that failed to pay the dues that were owed, no different than those conquered in nearby Dalmasca. Upon learning that he had made contact, another Warder instructed Shara (Yuki) to stop interfering in the affairs of non-Veena groups. This Warder demanded a vow to never speak of the event as it would not be overlooked a second time. If taken, Shara (Yuki) could avoid complete exile. It was an offer intended as a risky, but righteous kindness. Disgusted with the protection of a tradition over the lives of people facing the same war that could affect the Veena clans just the same, Shara angrily and impulsively instructs the other Warder to tell Shion that he has died in an unrelated assault, asking that the story be spun that it "appeared quick," and that "he didn't feel anything."

He later adopts the name "Yuki" in honor of the fallen Yukito.

He does not adopt this name before he, like the fallen Yukito, attempts to interfere in an attack on a group of people attempting to escort a few Domans out of the occupied territory. Taking a nearly mortal wound in place of a freedom fighting Miqo'te, Miah Mhakaracca, he assumes himself better suited to take the hit from a poisoned weapon — being in a position of guaranteed exile and used to the local herbs and possible toxins — than a terrified and tearful girl pleading for her life. While they are able to combat the patrol and escape with their lives, it is, again, not without casualties, and gives them little time to find a temporary place to hide in the shadows. While Yuki is able to treat the symptoms of the toxins as best he can with the Warder training he has, he eventually succumbs to it as he is attempting to help escort the other wounded like Miah to her their escape vessel. Their ill-fated mission to assist Doman refugees is mostly a failure.

The next time he awakes, it is to find several young Miqo'te eyes upon him, in a small healer's space, remarkably alive within the Black Shroud. It is from the aid of these Keepers of the Moon, as well as the time and space to recover, that he adopts one of their surnames, metaphorically severing ties to all Viera tradition. Witnessing Miah and her partner, A'lulah, grateful to be together and still speaking on the injustices of occupied Ala Mhigo and Doma, Yuki resolves that he will live not only for them, but for all those like them. He takes up the training of red magic to defend those in need, moving on from solely limiting himself to melee weaponry to train in a discipline that combines physical battle and magic.

Additionally, after the opening of Ishgard and the end of the Dragonsong War, he dabbles in the study of Sharlayan astrology in an effort to feel closer to those he left behind -- all sharing the same sky -- only to discover a connection with the magic of the Sharlayan sage, all in the process of actively recruiting. These turns of events inevitably lead him back into personal investigations of matters he considers unjust, from kidnappings and other criminal activities, to the fires of rebellion against occupation and subjugation.

He is hardly surprised to find himself standing alongside the warriors of Eorzea in the battle at Ghimlyt Dark, a background supporter and surely an excellent time to be injured and find himself... in a dreaming state.

Personality: Yuki is a young adult in a constant state of identity crisis, but he has hardly had the time or inclination to stop and sit with that information long enough to deeply reflect on it. Going from the young Shara Paharo, a normal viera with a twin sister he adores, to being marked as a male child, losing the surname that ties him to his family to be classified differently, to abandoning it all entirely, Yuki has only just started to truly think about what he wants out of his time. He is loyal the value of desiring to protect, though his idea of "protection" can be impulsive and dangerous, and does not always take the feelings of others into account.

He can be very much an "act now, think after there is a problem" when the situation is high octane and puts another clearly at risk, as he did with taking a nearly mortal blow for Miah. Some of this is tied to growing up knowing that this kind of connection could be dangerous and result in having him cast out from everything he has ever known, thus if a relationship is important enough to him or he is desperate enough, he can act this impulsively. Sometimes, to do nothing -- or not do enough -- leads to loss all the same.

That said, he is cautious when the situation does not demand he disregard caution and personal fears. Given the choice, for instance, he much prefers a planned stakeout and takedown over rushing into battle to engage an enemy. Also tied to his time as a Warder, assessment of a scene is critical and valuable. Weighing the pros and cons of making contact with someone can make him appear more aloof and standoffish, but once past the barrier of old tradition and habit, he is a helper to a possibly silly degree. The Miqo'te he found himself amongst have well instilled a sense of familial warmth and for all that his crafts may be very minimal, his cooking crude, he takes great joy in making things for others and letting them live to their fullest.

(This may or may not have led to him allowing some cute Miqo'te kittens (Miqittens?) to talk him into acting out plays, dances, and stories with them.)

Abilities & Inventory: Yuki is a bearer of the Echo, though it is not as strong as that of the Warrior of Light's. At most, he is occasionally able to view the trace aether left behind on an item (object reading), or viewing a memory from the eyes of another. This will be very weak (and opt-in), if it comes up at all. The immunity from becoming the thrall of an eikon is also laden in the Echo.

He is a red mage, granting him the ability to heal and cast offensive lightning/wind/fire/stone magic, along with wielding a rapier. Red magic sits somewhere between black magic and white magic, not as distinctly potent as either of their disciplines, limited by the caster's aetherial ability.

Additionally, he is in beginning study of Sharlayan astrology, mostly reading the stars and borrowing the aether laden in them as needed for tarot reading, but he would not call himself a proper astrologian. (At most, he can give someone a mild buff or tell make some educated guesses based on his reads.) He is further along -- and more enraptured -- by studying sage healing. He is able to connect to another person, with the desire to protect/defend allowing him to cast protective barriers. Said barriers are limited and can be broken.

And he can make basic items/armor pieces, not that he necessarily needs that skill in Songerein.

Items:
- Satchel of medicinal herbs and several preserved flowers
- Rapier (Murgleis Anemos Replica)
- Sage Wings (Tropaios Wings)
- Multicolor braided bracelet
- Leatherworking knife

Suitability & Plans: I actually had my eye on this game for quite a while and floundered on which character to bring, but I settled on Yuki specifically because FFXIV has such a war battered world, and the Viera lore especially lends itself to "what would these wild bunny people do if they were just allowed to do what they like?" I am looking to explore what a character who was kind of burdened by traditional structures and trying to do right by everyone will grow in a place where there is no constant threat to fear. That is not to say that he cannot exist without war or threats, and I think a stint where he got to see warm families and lovers enjoy each other will lend well to his desire to try it for himself.

His character is absolutely based loosely on the original Little Mermaid story in which he falls in love with this idealized idea of a person, but it does not work out at all. (This is meant to happen to him another time in his background even before Yukito, but I did not want this to get much longer!) His TDM already has him wondering if it's actually still okay to introduce himself and open up, if his name is okay to use, so some resolution for this guy, friends, and maybe being comfortable joining a society again are my goals!

I would be delighted with dragging him into things that are just silly and fun and sweet for a change too. Absolutely I want to play with him getting lost a lot in big town dream settings after living in the wilderness for years.

Test Drive Sample: Sample (I absolutely got eaten by the holidays and rolled up late...)

Questions: Not a question, but I am willing to nerf any red mage/magic abilities as needed, please let me know if you'd like this!
